Tomb Raider (PS1/1996) Guessed by S.Peelman
When I finally got my hands on a copy of Tomb Raider a few years ago, I read a blurb on the back case that read "the best game of 1996." In light of my huge admiration for Super Mario 64, I was skeptical. I couldn't imagine any game from 1996 coming close to the brilliance of Super Mario 64, which, at the time, was in my top five. How wrong I was. Tomb Raider was a revelation for me. The environments were amazingly constructed, the puzzles ingenious, and the shooting mechanics exciting. It does everything so masterfully: exploration, puzzle-solving, acrobatics, gunplay, etc. Tomb Raider STILL isn't the best game of 1996, but it's far and away the second best game.
