It's all about perspective though.
In my mind and I truly led myself to believe that it was actually a very love-highlighting ending, showing how far Joel is willing to go for Ellie.
(And I was CONVINCED one or both would die. I was shouting my lunges out for the game to end whenever Joel and Ellie were reunited and the pace was slow throughout Spring).
