It can be the only sensible explanation, but it's still the dumbest possible way to achieve it. Pissing off the user base of what will most probably be the best seller of the series for 7th gen, and possibly the lifetime best PS3 1st party seller is not good marketing.
The first main GT title of each gen has always sold better than the second, there's nothing wrong about it, why ruining a winning formula?
