I tested a few PS3 games running through the HDMI in port (Super Street Fighter IV: AE, Persona 4 Arena, Killzone 2, Sonic Generations and MGS VR Missions just for kicks) and it worked just fine. There was a little bit of a delay but it was definitely playable and no where near as bad as some people in this thread make it out to be.
I wouldn't replace the HDMI in for just connecting it to the TV but if some reason you had to, you should have no problems with casual play.
