#12: Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
Hideo Kojima struck the perfect balance of incredible story and thrilling gameplay with the first Metal Gear Solid. I absolutely love how the story of MGS unfolds, there's mystery, suspense, betrayals, vengence, long lost brothers, Naomi is British. To go along with this amazing story is gameplay like no other game. You don't go in guns blazing, you sneak you way inside the complex on Shadow Moses island, catching guards unware and using all sorts of gadgets to get by unnoticed.
That's not to say Snake can't put up a fight, the incredible boss fights are ample proof of that. Part of the genius of this game comes from wide variety in those encounters from running after Ocelot who's bouncing bullets at you to fighting the cyborg ninja in hand to hand combat, to a sniper duel with Sniper Wolf and let's not forget the insane encounter with Psycho Mantis who truly messes with your mind.
I've played this through this game so many times, sometimes saving Meryl, other times letting her die (what can I say, I wanted the optic camouflage) and I never get tired of it. This is pure gaming gold.
