They're usually like the base game but on steroids, with lots of extra challenges and crazy powerful weapons to collect, as well as new characters (I think DW8XL has 5 new choices). Just make sure you buy it on PS3 if you can, the XL and Empires expansions don't seem to come out on X360. Although, you could wait for the Vita and PS4 versions, which have both DW8 and XL included. Vita has cross-save as well I believe. You'd have to wait until the new year though
