Specs? Because I doubt a $1,000 PC would be inadequate today, unless you bought OEM who usually pairs it with a low-end GPU, which is then... To put bluntly. - Your own fault.
As for PC gaming being expensive, sure the hardware is more expensive, but the games aren't, if you like to buy allot of games and we are talking hundreds here, then you can save thousands by being a PC gamer.
Most new Release games are $10+ cheaper, if you play your cards right you can usually get an additional 20-30% discount on the new releases by using Green Man Gaming or jumping on a sale at Amazon, Steam, GoG, Origin, uPlay etc'. (There is always a sale, somewhere.)
And lets not forget the humble bundle either.
And. Free. Online.
And. Free. Games.
All my PC's are currently ranging from 2-4 years old currently, they can all run the latest games, granted my main PC is down and out for the count because of the rebuild as I am going with a different colour theme for the board, ram and case, dropping in quad Radeon 290X's and doubling my Ram to 64Gb and thus in turn having to rebuild the entire water loop. (Takes time to plan, cut, measure, order bits and test the loop. - Should be done by end of January with some luck.)
Next year, I'll do it all again as I upgrade to Haswell-E 8 core CPU.
