Microsoft's Phil "Genuinely Likeable Executive" Spencer has been chatting to his Twitter followers about the challenges of porting high quality existing IP to new consoles. Alas, it's not always financially practical unless the game in question is a guaranteed big-hitter. Like, for instance, the original Fable, which is currently being treated to an "Anniversary" remaster for Xbox 360.
The conversation is heavily abbreviated, so you may have to read between the lines a little. Jump aboard the TwitLonger bandwagon, Phil! Hideo Kojima has had plenty of fun with it.
@JosephLapp @Xbox Old games on unsupported plats is an industry prob imo. Port/stream = $$. Big IP (Fable) works but too much great IP lost.
@JosephLapp @Xbox Yea, less a Fable point. Fable 1 on XB1 makes sense. Thanks to all you that actually bought the units NPD reports.
There's already a Fable game in development for Xbox One - the online-centric Fable: Legends, in which teams of four heroes (player and/or computer-controlled) complete quests while another player or computer character tries to stop them. We think it looks very promising, though we do worry that fans of the original single player yarns may feel under-served.
Spencer also took a moment this weekend to nod his head approvingly at the possibility of a new platformer from Rare, developers of the hailed Banjo Kazooie franchise and the rather less-loved Kinect Sports series.
@nicholas362B @RareLtd Max http://bit.ly/19qUYlW from @pressplay_games and it's a very nice plat. A new Rare plat would also be great.
As ever with Spencer, it's not clear how much of this is just chewing the fat, or a deliberate hint as to unannounced projects. The idea of an Xbox One version of Fable: Anniversary seems probable, at least, providing it sells in appropriately huge quantities on Xbox 360.e great.
