I think what it comes down to is not just the games or the hardware but the environment. At least for me.
I have a PS3, happily bought a PS4, I have a big trophy collection I'd like to expand and I have PS+. With that setup I am practically forced by all logic and common sense to buy a Vita. I could tell you on the spot about at least 10 3DS games I am dying to play but it would've been just not feasible to go and buy a 3DS now. Because I now have the holy trinity of gaming at home and this seamless convergence of 3 different systems is fun in and of itself. I'm talking cross buy, cross save, remote play and at least 4 new games for free EVERY month I mean Nintendo just now managed to bring the 3DS and Wii Systems together... kind off.
I love Nintendo and I hate to see Sony and Nintendo fans competing against each other(when they should unite against the real enemy :P)
I will eventually buy a WiiU and maybe even a 3DS but what is keeping me the most from it right now are not the games or the money but the separate environments I'd have to upkeep.
