So this was an old thread that was bumped (by me).  I felt the same way as many of you did.  That I had played plenty of time on these controller and was showing no signs of wear.    I bumped this thread because mine in fact are showing those signs of wear now too.   And I was in here commenting against it just a few weeks ago.

The rubber textured grip on the outside has a bumpy more course texture.  There appears to be a very, very thin rubber coating over top of the harder rubber contained underneath coating the joystick.   I'm getting peeling of this outer 'grip' layer forming on (2) seperate controllers --- (1) purchased outside of the console, from two different locations.    I own (7) Dualshock 3's and have never had an issue with anything outside of the Joystick wearing out.  So this isn't a 'greasy hands / poorly taken care off / etc /etc' situation.   It's happening on the left sticks, so I can logically assume that the 'upward' pressing and holding for sprinting / movement / etc  is causing the problem.

While it's not as 'big' a deal (yet) as people (MS trolls) are making it.  It's definitely happening and I would imagine it would/will be happening to most gamers playing active games.  ( I own Resogun / Veteran mode skill level) and Killzone Shadowfall.    I've beat the game and logged maybe 10-20 hours into Multiplayer.  You will only see more of these types of posts,  I would guarantee it.
