I actually hold my PS Vita almost like this http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mission/files/2012/02/Vita-At-Hand.jpg, with the difference being having my index finger on those triggers already. That's the most confortable way to use it, imo. 

that's exactly how I hold it, and it kills my ring fingers. 

But Runa, isnt it designed just like the PSP in that regard? I think your problem is the weight and not the shape.
