Well, you could look at it the opposite way too. I know most people probably don't pay attention to the story whatsoever but the main villain became the main villain because you betrayed him in one of the missions. So you could say that the game is telling you that betraying your comrades is a bad idea.

Also the game never really explains why the US has all these orbital weapons in space while seemingly no one else does. If you think about it, maybe the game is decrying massive armament by showing a scenario where your own weapons are used against you and now the massive powers get a taste of their own medicine.

That or I'm thinking too much and everything was made just to have pretty explosions go off everywhere.
