The PS3 did crap at a time. 360 did crap at a time. None of their fanbases said anything about a gaming crash.

Bullshit. "The Wii is killing gaming" was all over the place at the start of last generation.

Death is an exaggeration, but I do believe that without Nintendo, or a company like them, gaming will stagnate. Why? Because other hardware manufacturers don't lead, they just do what the publishers ask them to do. And the publishers only want hardware to evolve in ways that make their job easier, distilling down to the publisher dream of the One Console, which happens to look an awful lot like a PC.

If the publishers get their way, only software innovation (where publishers add value) will be permitted, hardware innovation (where manufacturers add value) will be forbidden. And since hardware demands software, only an integrated hardware/software approach to gaming has a chance of bucking the One Console trend.

Microsoft and Sony have the resources to theoretically take an integrated approach, but Microsoft is more interested in adding value through services than hardware, and Sony simply doesn't seem to be able to integrate all its resources. Out of the big manufacturers, Nintendo simply has the best record at advancing hardware innovation in video games.
