I mean, I think they could have squeezed a little more out of the N64 too. Of course, no matter how much that console was optimized, it would never have reached Playstation 2 levels. The PS3 and even the Xbox 360 could do more but they aren't going to reach PS4/Xbox One power. I guess the time is right for a new gen. Some people felt that it's way past time and wanted the new consoles a year or two ago. For me, I'm still okay with gen 7.

I'm tempted to impulse buy an Xbox One but no backwards compatibility is really an issue for me.

Don't even think about snatching an X1 yet. I would still stick with a 360 or PS3. The biggest games so far just happen to be on the last gen consoles too.

I don't even know where I'd put one.  Of course I'd put the new console on my best TV but that TV already has a PS3, PC, 360, and Wii U connected to it.  There just isn't room for anything else and I ain't disconnecting a console that has games I love to play (which is all of them) and replacing it with a console with no games.  I don't think there's room for Kinect in my game room, either.

I have a 1080p TV in the living room and it looks great.  I have a PS3 and 360 (with Kinect 1.0)  in there, too but that's not my favorite gaming environment.  There's still plenty of 7th gen games for me to play.  GTAV, MGSV, Rayman Legends, Splinter Cell Blacklist, etc.  I think I can hold out.
