Read your spoilers and don't see why that doesn't make sense.

Once you figure out that Ringabel is actually Dark Knight Din (I mean, it's pretty obvious once you read the entries in D's Journal). Since it describes all the events the party takes before they actually take it then you could only have two options:

- Time Travelling
- Parallel Dimensions

Since Time Travelling has been done to exhaustion, i'm glad they took the parallel dimensions route.

It's not about making sense (although there are some unanswered questions), it's about having to replay the same old stuff time and time again. The game continues, but it's basically Monster Hunter style. It's like the developers said: "Oh, there's basically no real content left, but let's pad it out."

Components are used by a job that can combine items to create new stuff.

Ah I understand now. It's like FFV's second world but without any differences at all. Oh well, I'll see it when I get there, still working my way surviving on Chapter 3.

That job's probably the Salve-Maker then. Already have Pirate and Performer, need to get it next (Pirate battle was too damn tough on Hard).

Hard difficulty starts changing things up a lot on chapter 3. Bosses start having double HP and stats and some boss fights see an increment on enemies. Had to fight 3 Automatons with 13500 HP each on the Graap Keep, while the Normal difficulty fight is only 2 Automatons with 10000 HP each. Pirate Boss had 60350 HP on Hard while on Normal has only 30000 HP.
