@OP: Yes and no.
Conceptually yes, because a 7th gen console needed an optical drive anyway, choosing BD instead of DVD gave anyway at least one advantage, no disc swaps, also to gamers not interested in the other features.
Practically no because it increased the minimum price one had to pay to have the console, and that overprice, now very modest, was initially very high.
But there is an issue where they are similar also conceptually, a new console is supposed to offer something new, it can be greater HW power, new SW features (often made viable by greater HW power itself) or HW features.
So it depends on the point of view, but sales results and new features acceptance will tell you how much a given point of view is shared by people. BD in particular became a lot more accepted and even desired as soon as the overprice it implied dropped enough and the total price too (a small overprice could still have a bad effect if it makes the totall price exceed some psychological thresholds).
