No, not anymore, previously yes, but the fact that you HAVE to have it in order to play PS4 online is just bullshit and devalues the service in general in my opinion.

For the Free to Play games, Online is still free.

To the person that said you are renting said games, yes you are correct, but at the same time, there are plenty of titles that are worth the $30 a year you pay for it.

Yes, it doesn't affect me because I've maintained a Playstation Plus subscription from the beginning, and I could see where it would turn people away because you're already shelling out $40-60 for most games.   However, the amount of value you get for having that service, greatly offsets the cost of buying these games separately.

I am a fan of physical content, because if someone wants to borrow a game, they have that option, and on the Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita, you would save a LOT on storage space, which can add up real fast going all digital.   On the Playstation 3, this was only allowed if your second activated PS3 was on their system.   On the Playstation Vita, this was only possible if two people were sharing the same account, but don't expect to play with that person, ever.   On the Playstation 4, the only benefit of physical copies is trading said games to other people, by installing the games onto the hard drive, it might turn people away from buying that physical copy to save space, especially if they have no friends.   You can of course, change the primary console I believe once every 24 hours.

People have been paying for Xbox Live for years, and getting far less, although I've heard that platform has dedicated servers.
