The reason soccer is so unpopular in the US is because it's not shown on television or advertised much. There isn't any interest from television networks in making soccer popular because it's not an advertisement friendly sport, you can't interrupt the game every 5 minutes for ads because the action doesn't stop, there's no timeouts or anything.
American TV networks have been pestering FIFA for years to make the game more advertisement friendly with (luckily) no result yet.
