Things that Gran Turismo has to change to become relevant in the next generation

I've never experienced Gran Turismo, it just isn't popular where I live. Don't know if I should give GT5 a try, the few racing games i liked, are GRID 2, and mostly Need For Speed: Carbon, I loved the campaign!
