Again, it really depends on how far away the player is from the display.

When I game on PC, my face is maybe 18" away and I can see how sharp everything is when rendered at 1920x1080.

For whatever reason, I find myself standing/sitting closer to the TV when the visuals are sharper. Maybe so I can see all that detail. If I sit back far enough, the secondary computer display I have in the same room actually looks bigger in perspective due to proximity and I lose all that fine detail.

Since I don't mind standing when I play as a member of the arcade generation, my thing when I'm really into a game is to stand about arm's reach away from the TV and then it really makes a difference. It's like sitting in front of a 1080p display when gaming on PC.
