While that is true, they are makings games for the hardware, and you need said hardware not to break to play those games :P So knowing how it fairs in the temperate department etc is important.
Also the hardware determines how easy it is to developer for, which is very important (*cough* PS3 ports). Also, having better graphics is always a nice plus ^^ A game that plays well and looks good almost always gets to ride the hype train all the way to big numbers town.
