That's a lot of assumptions right there.
Yeah, FF hardcore fans are picky, but that should be a bit too far, specially given a lot of other estabilished RPGs throw you a game over screen if your main character falls, like Bioware or Bethesda games, and they aren't exactly blasted to oblivion because of that.
