Totally retarded. All just to lie in the sun for hours and get drunk. I would rather shoot myself than do that. My beaches must be relatively empty or I am not going to even bother to lie down there.

 

Yes, I know that it is not exclusive to Germans. But it is an original German thing. In the 1930's when Hitler started subsidising German workers to go on holidays abroad - something no one else in Europe did at the time -  created the first wave of "Germans first on the beach with a towel" jokes.

Later when Germany (West) recovered from the war in the 1960s and their economy began to kick ass the second wave of German tourists flocking to European beaches the jokes began all over again.

But as you stated it is not exclusive to Germans any longer.
