No shit games from the 90's didnt use volumetric lighting as thats something only now seen in 8th gen engines - what a freaking stupid comment. For all time just go and see how engines have evolved and how different tech has come in. This aint rocket science but im guessing you couldnt tell me the difference between unreal 2 + 3. Volumetric lighting IS a big improvement omfg.

Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, Serious Sam had Volumetric Lighting/Crepuscular Rays/God Rays. - Heck you even had Tessellation back then in games like Serious Sam, Counter Strike and Morrowind.

But effects such as those will only take you so far, there is so much more to rendering in order to improve an overall image.

No they didnt. Where you getting your facts from? Im guessing you think lighting = volumetric lighting and polygons = tesselation?

*Sigh*

Morrowind:

Sorry if I just "schooled" you on Tessellation.
The differences are more pronounced if you open the images full screen and flip between them.

Now, wan't me to download and install Unreal 99 and Unreal Tournament 1 and show you the options for Volumetric Lighting via print screens? Or is this enough?

School yourself because thats a now defunct and never widely used basic version of tesselation but certainly not what you see nowadays, plus it isnt engine specific but is card specific. PhysX isnt part of a game gen, so this aint either. Get your facts right. Go for it lets see what youll try to claim as volumetric lighting when its just basic bull.
