It is the current most convenient shorthand. Everyone knows what you're talking about and there's no confusion.

Its usefulness will last a few more years and I don't see a problem.

Stupidity should never be tolerated just because intelligent people can figure out what was actually meant.

As I've said, "new gen" carries the same ability to clarify without being wrong. So if you're not comfortable with either "current gen" or "gen 8" for WiiU/PS4/XBO, then use "new gen". "Next-gen" needs to be available for use in referring to the 4DS/PSP3/WiiV/PS5/XBTwo. I really don't want to see the ludicrous "next-next-gen" that popped up throughout the last generation to refer to the current one.

EDIT: Oh, and "new gen" is even shorter-hand than "next gen", so "shorthand" isn't a justifiable argument for using "next gen", either.

Guess what. Words mean what people think they mean. People aren't stupid for using a term everyone understands.

Insisting everything means exactly what the words that make it up say is pedantic.

There's no "argument". It just is what it is and you can't change it.
