The latter parts are very emotional and it explains a lot. Though the ending is pretty anticlimactic.
It is absolutely worth reading through though, especially by the way you praise it, it would be a crime not to read through the whole story even once.

I would recommend watching the anime but skipping the last arc of the anime, since its not really part of the story. For some reason it gets tiresome reading from beginning to end so its better to watch then read.
