Meat actually is a necessary part of a balanced diet, its the main source of protein and iron in our diets.

Humans are omnivores which means that we are 'designed' (for lack of a better word) to eat both meat and plants, not one or the other.

Actually a well planned out diet can give you all the protein you need. The advantage of meat is that you get all the amino acids you need from one source, but if a vegetarian eats grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts, then he too will have all the amino acids he needs. So vegetarianism hinges on diversity of foods, which can be very tasty. Former record holding sprinter Carl Lewis is a vegetarian, so are other world class athletes.
