In any sort of market whether its electronica like phones, tvs, or car brands or clothing brands or food, it doesn't matter.
All these markets have 'generations' in one way or another, and taking your established position in the market over to the next is crucial. Business is all about establishing a strong position, growing this, maintaining this, innovating and making money because of this.
Saying that Nintendo didn't 'lose' in the 64 era against the new kid on the block PSX is nonsense.
One can make an argument about who makes the most money of course, but its hard, or even impossible to get all the rights figures of these companies. Even if you have numbers, there are many legal ways to put figures in financial report in ways by which you can put certain costs under different company divisions.
