#40 - Star Wars Battlefront 2 (Kudos to no-one for guessing this)
Let me preface this by saying: I'm not really a fan of Star Wars. I've seen all the films, but I never particularly got into the backstory or anything and never felt particularly invested in the films. Which makes you realise what an achievement it is that this game made it into my top 50 favourite games of all time list; let alone in at #40.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 was just everything I look for from a shooter. I like the extra layer of tactical play buried underneath everything else. Battlefront 2 provided this in droves. You were capturing bases and had to figure whether it was better to defend what you have or plow forward. Which route should you take? Do you capture the base with the built-in defences or capture the one which can provide you with vehicles? Sounds simplistic; but so many shooters sorely miss this mark by miles.
Little touches, like being able to command other units to follow you, really added to the flavour of the game. It helped that there was a lock-on option for an idiot shooter like me, too.
The campaign was nothing to write home about, but Galactic Conquest was absolutely the bees knees. Capture the galaxy planet by planet. Defend what you have. Engage in space battles.
Seriously, I could go on and on listing the merits of this game. It's one I return to regularly; and I can't wait to see what DICE bring to the formula in 2015.
