The existence of a system like this creates a powerful incentive for the developer to "encourage" players to buy them, even if not necessary. It lines up some bad incentives for game design. Not saying they have to, but the developer (and the suits who pay that developer's salary) also needs to show self discipline. This is one step on the slope.
