I believe, at this point, that it's too late to worry about that.
Nintendo long ago ceded much of the gaming market to Microsoft and Sony. They concentrated on platformers, then on motion controlled games, until it reached a point where a significant portion of the gaming public was no longer even considering Nintendo consoles.
As far as I can tell, Nintendo eschewed variety in order to stay "family friendly", probably with the idea that many of the new genres and types of games would be fads. They've ignored a large segment of gamers up to this point and it's not going to be easy to win them over.
