Not long ago when I was considering getting a 3D TV I was tempted to buy a Onkyo HT-7.1 3D system that supports Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, Dolby Digital Plus and Virtual Surround (yes, I just looked it up for reference but I am not sure what the model was)

It would have cost me less than £300.00 (ebay). I don't know maybe US$500.00.

Maybe it wasn't a very good one.

That's probably a good one, amplifiers have gone down a lot in price. Or did that include a set of cheap speakers?

The funny thing is, you only need one with hdmi that supports 7.1 linear pcm nowadays. All the sound decoding is done on the ps3/ps4 and send uncompressed to the amplifier. If you want to go full HD sound you might want to look for one that supports 88.2 / 96 / 176.4 / 192 khz sound input with 192khz discreet DA converters inside. There's only a handful of movies that support 96khz and 192khz sound though.

I'm using a Yamaha RX-V3800 for movie watching and a Yamaha RX-V473 in the living room (that's a 5.1 system the 573 is 7.1) Sound is great from both, although that's also up to the speakers ofcourse.
