I had a similar experience with Monster Hunter. It looks like such a good game but the design is so slow and complicated that i just stop playing it.

With God Eater i didnt have the same problem. Its alot more streamlined and easy to pick up. Having a story helps aswell. But i also have been having trouble beating it.

On a different note though, Soul Sacrifice has a different design from those two. There still is repetition but the systems all fall into place with the action and improving your character spells gets addicting. I also like the whole setting and story.

My point here is, it might be worth it for you to give Soul sacrifice a go (just play the demo). It might redeem the genre for you. Aside from that, i have the same problem as you with Toukiden and the upcoming Freedom Wars. I dont like the grinding design unless its really well made like Soul sacrifice. Toukiden reminds me alot of Onimusha so its been difficult. I think theres  a demo coming out. That would really help.

Thanks for the feedback.  I agree with you that the best thing about God Eater is the story.  I mean, it's not stellar or anything but I enjoyed some of the characters like Kota and Soma and I was interested to see where it was going.

I also liked the addition of guns over Monster Hunter, added another layer.  And it was faster paced.

But still, good god, the repetition.  Felt like I must've faced the same enemies like 100 times at the point I gave up.  And always in one of the same 4-5 environments as well.  I guess most of the game is hidden away in multi-player, but I found it an absolute drag in single player when I wasn't progressing the story.

It's a problem that JRPG's in general face, but I dunno.  I can grind the same enemies in a game like Atelier or Tales just because I enjoy the battle systems in those games.  Mashing light attacks in God Eater, and occassionally dashing or jumping just wasn't fun.

Maybe I will give Soul Sacrifice a try.  I'll admit that of all the clones, it does interest me the most purely because I've enjoyed a lot of the artwork of monsters and settings from the game.
