When most people think of "the elements", they think of the four classical elements that have been around in the human consciouness since probably before recorded history. They do not automatically think of the scientific periodic table of elements. That is more of a modern, and certainly more nerdy phenominon. The table is cool, don't get me wrong. But most people know/think of the classical elements.
