Ok, will try to keep this brief (just for the record, im making this enquiry on behalf of a friend).
So I have a friend who around 7 years ago (maybe longer) was self employed. He left this and entered full time employment, which he has been in for minimum of seven years.
He says he informed them he was no longer self employed (when pressed if it was done in writing, he said it was) and that he was in employment. At the beginning of this tax year he noticed he was being taxed alot more than others (most of us on 944L code I think his was 444). On a normal month when both he and a fellow employee had worked the same hours and should get paid the same amount, he picked up over £100 less than his fellow worker.
He rang to enquire and they said the reason he was paying so much more tax was because he was listed as self employed (even though he isnt nor has he been for 7+ years). They also told him he owed over £2000 more in arrears (which I think scared him off and since then he hasnt acted on the problem).
As im no expert on what he should do, and this forum the only one I use I thought there maybe someone here who can help with just some advice on what action he should take.
Also would he be able to claim back the money he has been charged? and how would he stand with the £2000 arrears they mentioned (We assume this is somekind of charge because they are treating him as self employed - while also working full time - but hasnt been sending in his tax info and such at the end of the financial year).
Any help is welcome
