Just because they're expanding the market, doesn't mean they can't steal customers. The Wii is selling faster than the PS2 did, meaning it could sell to every person who bought a PS2 in the same timeframe, and still have room to sell to an expanded market.
And those numbers aren't complete jokes. It's hard to get the true numbers, because there's no real data for this type of thing. But through looking at sales of consoles (especially the PS2) and games, and looking at the more "hardcore" games (like Final Fantasy games), and more casual games (like GTA), one can make a rough estimate.
And Metroid Prime 3 is getting close to outselling Metroid Prime 2, meaning that gamers that didn't even play the 2nd one will end up playing the 3rd one (I am one of them).
