Well, just so that nobody else can swoop in and claim the glory: Final Fantasy VI/III.
(although technically, the moment you're referring to happened after Kefka fucked the world up. I was just focusing on the characters and didn't remember)

This game taught me that if I stick around for my friends when things look bad, they might just stop being assholes and randomly ditching me all the time.
