'Duck Hunt'
as part of the Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) released in Europe in 1987.
This is probably the first game I've ever played. 'Duck Hunt' anyway, because I didn't really like the Mario at first. It was too hard for my young self and I didn't get to laugh as much as I did on 'Duck Hunt'. Naturally, as time flew by, I began to appreciate Super Mario Bros. as well and also started to like that game a lot. I fondly remember blasting away at that small, old, slightly flickering tv-screen up in the attic of my aunt's house. Me and cousin would play together or turns, trying to beat each others high-scores. This game introduced me to Nintendo, to it's characters and to it's systems. A gaming-match made in heaven it seemed.
I never had the NES in those days myself, not until many years later, so I had to go over to my aunt's house every time I wanted to play a video-game. Luckily, that was just one block from my own house. Maybe, this game is the reason we, my cousins, my aunt and me, got so close. They're like brothers to me where I have none of my own, and she was like a second mother. Thank you, Duck Hunt.
I take it the rules of this game are known to everyone. Just shoot the ducks. That's it. But what's mostly remembered about this game is of course, the dog. Whether it was supposed to or not, this dog would go on to become one of the most hated and notorious characters in all of gaming. It's famous for it. This dog would show it's face and laugh at yours everytime you'd miss shooting a duck. It became the embodyment of frustration, and every player of Duck Hunt, including me, wanted not nothing more than to be able to shoot the dog.
