Call of Duty and God of War wouldn't dominate their genres if this were true "do not rely on satisfying gameplay in order to achieve a sense of greatness". The gameplay is probably the main reason the games are so popular. Look at the hack 'n slash genre, it's all about gameplay so would GoW have been a hit if it just sounded and looked great with a cool story? Probably not.

And this doesn't make sense in regards to GoW "a lot of things that look like they’re really impressive, even though what you’re actually doing as a player isn’t terribly impressive at all", what games actually require you to play in a way normal people would call impressive? Games aren't about being impressive but about having fun, if you want your skill challenged then play on the hardest difficulty which in GoW is more than hard enough for 99% of gamers, confusing player actions being skillful with impressive is stupid.
