Reading the review, i dont think you really played the game to enjoy it.
You are not limited to only 6 pokémon. Especially with the new xp share. I have had more than 2 teams of pokémon. I have tried to reduce that cause i was taking too long to advance through the game. So i have about 9 i swap back in and out depending on what i feel like using. Of course, these are not only cosmetic choices, they need to cover a wide array of types so i always have counters for any type of pokémon.
I am up to the 7th Gym i think. I am in a pretty cool part of the story. So far though, it hasnt amazed me the same way Black/White 2 did, but the presentation is definitly better and its far from beeing a bad game.
Also, im constantly changing my first line pokémon, i usually put in that spot the pokémon that is the least leveled from my team to increase his leveling pace so i never had the problem of always using the same pokémon. Of course if you always keep the same one, he is gonna become a powerhouse before all others.
In conclusion, i think you dont like pokémon games. I dont know why you thought this one would be any different. The combat has not changed and will never change, because it works and its what pokémon is about. I dont think your mindset going in was the best one to enjoy the game as some of those criticisms are purely self-inflicted.
