I'm really, really glad I never got into the whole achievement collection thingy, otherwise I'd probably prefer The Conduit over Knights of the Old Republic and that would suck balls. Well, on the other hand I did waste my time on getting 15 researchers in a single level in A Game of Dwarves so I guess I'm in the risk zone.
But I do find the achievement system interesting. It's apparent that achievements that doesn't get added to a global achievement system are totally worthless. The far majority of games have achievements in one way or the other, like getting all the stars in Mario or Sonic, beating Metroid in under 3hours or defeating Nemesis in Final Fantasy X. But those achievements, and to some extent Steam achievements, really don't count because there's no way to add them all up and show off to friends and foes. Even if getting these achievements mean unlocking content in the game they're still very much inferior.
So one can only assume that it's really not about the achievements themselves but showing them to people in an easy way. It's about bragging rights. And I guess that's why the lack of a "true" achievement system on Nintendo/pre 7th gen systems and to a lesser extent Steam doesn't bother me personally because I don't value such a feature. I do like collecting all the coins in Mario and getting all the heart-pieces in Zelda but I don't worry about whether or not other people can see it. And if I did want to show off I could just post a screenshot on Miiverse or something...
