Spot on. They were truly beastly machines.

When current gen launched it was amazing graphics. Oblivion, Gears of War, DMC4 looked almost unbelievable compared to PS2 games. This time multiplats look like current gen, only with sharper textures. And sometimes they're not even in a higher res, they're not even 1080p.

I do think The Division and some other games look very very good (and it remains to be seen how it looks on console once it's out in the shops), but in general I feel like next gen games are graphically on par with graphics on fairly cheap PCs.

I agree totally with the bolded.  These systems are underpowered.  The real problem for both systems longevity is that the tablet/phone market has been doubling or tripling their power every year or less.  If these consoles are going to last 7+ years, smartphones will have eclipsed them by then.  This generation will be much shorter(4-5 yrs) due to the way under powered systems.  Even the PS4 is too weak.  What is more than likely to happen is that game designers/publishers will limit their games dramatically in 2-3 years because they won't want to waste resources for just the PC market.  3-4 years from now, there will be a number of tablets with processors and GPU's that rival the XB1/PS4.  Where will that leave the consoles?  Why buy a console when the same games will be playable from a tablet that you can take anywhere?  Sony/M$ didn't build this next gen with future proof in mind at all.

When phones and tablets manage to get the gaming form factor right, maybe they'll become a threat to home consoles. The way they are now, I don't see those platform as viable for "serious" gaming. Certainly not for blockbuster type games or other AAA franchises.
