Okay so it is your word against the one of the former CEO of Sony.
Basic economics:
R&D for the PS3 with Cell / BluRay was rather big and even without these costs included the PS3 lost 3 billion USD in 2008.
In 2009 the Playstation division lost another 600 million. http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/ar/8ido180000023g2o-att/SonyAR09-E.pdf
In 2010 the Playstation division was merged with Vaio division and it became very hard to track each product by itself. Anyway, the division lost 900 million USD http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/ar/8ido18000003dkyy-att/8ido18000003dl0u.pdf
In 2011 the Playstation division posted a profit for the very first time. Playstation 2, PSP, PS3 and Vaio made a combined profit of 450 million USD
http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/ar/report2011/SonyAR11-E.pdf
In 2012 Sony mixed the new division (Playstation + Vaio) with the TV business and it gets impossible to track. However this division reported a 2.8 billion USD loss http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/ar/2012/common/docs/EAR.pdf
In 2013 the Playstation division is back and called "game" it reported a 29 million USD Profit.
Feel free to show me when and where the Playstation 3 made those billions of USD back. Can't wait for this one.
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
