People wanted a Vita when they heard the price of the Vita and 3DS were both going to be $250.  Once Nintendo dropped the 3DS to $179, Vita no longer interested people.  People lost interest in the Vita prior to the launch of the system.

 Then people lost interest in the Wii-U post launch because they realized that Nintendo wasn't delivering the product they promised. 

Wii U didn't have a lot of hype prior to the launch either.  I seem to remember a lot of people bashing it because it was way too expensive for a system that's just as powerful as the PS3.  Nintendo fans were the only one that were backing it up and repeating how everyone hated the Wii before launch and that sold the most consoles this gen.  Nintendo fans were also fixated on the rumor that the PS4 and Next Box would be just as powerful as the WIi U because graphics have peaked, and that all Wii U games were going to be 1080p 60fps

 Pretty much what I'm saying though. The system did have a decent ammount of hype after E3 '12, because Nintendo promised a super powerful next gen system with a robust online service and third party support unrivaled by any other Nintendo system in history. People who actually purchased it (myself included) didn't get any of that.
