For me, what has been off about Killzone isn't just one thing. First, the story is not told very well and the characters are not compelling. Then the mutliplayer was always a bit too sluggish for my taste and lacked the customization of other FPS games that I had come to expect by the time Killzone 3 was out. I also felt that the overall presentation, even going as far as the title music, has always felt a little bland. I love Killzone more for its multiplayer and story 'potential' than anything it has actually achieved in either category up to this point.

All of this is why I am really excited from what I've seen and heard of Shadow Fall. The single player story is going a different direction instead of the whole war scenario of previous games and the gameplay is being expanded on greatly over the previous pure trigger squeezers. Echo looks like she may be the first truly compelling character in the series. Then you have the multiplayer which is reportedly less sluggish and more responsive than previous titles. It has also added a ton of challenges and the weapon attachments were something that just needed to happen at this point.
