Yeah....that might be the case.
I disagreed with many of his scores (A 10 for Kirby: Return to dreamland? A 5/10 for Mario Kart 7 and Kid Icarus: Uprising)....
...but he always had this aura of....I don´t know....honesty (? )around him that made his pieces entertaining to read.
In a world where game reviewers complain about too much text and not enough gameplay in a visual novel (the fucking IGN-Ace Attorney5 review), where reviewers can´t be arsed to learn how the controlls of a game work and instead describe them as broken (Skyward Sword´s Gamespot review, almost all Wonderful 101 reviews)...he was a breath of fresh air
....but, as you implied: Gaming journalism is nothing more than paid off glorified advertisment, most journalists aren´t particularly interested in taking the consumer´s side in the debate (The ammount of downplaying around some periods of the pre180 XBone was shocking)...
