They didn't. When Apple was at the edge of bankrupcy, Microsoft invested in them. They wanted to have competitors. They didn't want to work their way on a monopoly.

 

Xbox was an attempt to reduce Sony's marketshare. It had nothing to do with "crushing them" or Nintendo, for that matter.
