The monitor does need to be plugged into the GPU rather than the Motherboard.
I assume you have only a D-Sub monitor? I.E. One of these connectors.
If that's the case you need to get a DVI or HDMI or Display Port to D-sub converter or buy a more modern monitor or check to see if your monitor has DVI or HDMI.
