Before I smash Zod95, let me address the current conversation going on in this thread.
The PS3 will NOT outsell the Wii lifetime.
Sony cannot afford to be fighting their old console like they did with the PS2 in the 7th gen.
The reason PS2 made those sales in the 7th gen is because PS3 failed to pick up the torch.
The PS3 was supposed to make the PS2 obsolete but it was a failure out of the gate & Sony needed the PS2 to slow the bleeding.
The financial bleeding, that is.
The words come directly from Andrew House, the President & Group Chief Executive Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment Incorporated.
Andrew House: "Sony Computer Entertainment Isn't Allowed To Fail Anymore with PS4"
He HIMSELF said the following to a Japanese publication Diamond Online:
"Sony Computer Entertainment isn’t allowed to fail anymore with PS4, because the game business for Sony is a “Core” (business) that embodies a fusion of both hardware and software."
If the PS4 fails to pick up the torch the PS3 holds, it's doomsday for Sony Computer Entertaiment.
They CANNOT afford to be fighting off the PS3 trying to make the PS4 a success.
The PS4 is supposed to make the PS3 obsolete & hasten the end of its life not prolong it.
If the PS3 overshadows the PS4, its successor, then PS4 can't recoup Sony's money for R&D & other expenses.
If Sony can't recoup their money on the PS4, then this wrecks Sony Computer Entertainment which short-circuits plans to keep the PS3 going indefinitely.
Sony is coming off the prospect of multiple failures.
•The PSP while selling the best of any Nintendo handheld challenger ever failed in its mission to "elevate portable gaming out of the handheld gaming ghetto", failed to be a financial success, failed in sales power, & damn sure failed to have the public presence of the DS.
•The PS3 bombed out of the gate & only surpassed the 360 thanks to Japan where 360 had no real presence.
Its losses in the first 2 years surpassed the profits Sony made from both the PS1 & PS2 in their entire lifetimes—the entire PlayStation era!
•The PSPgo straight up bombed like the Virtual Boy. Yet unlike Virtual Boy didn't even have profitability when it bombed.
•The PSVita is getting utterly DESTROYED by the 3DS. It's selling at a loss, like the PSP it's not the go-to platform for games, and with the aspect of smartphones threatening handhelds altogether will most likely be pushed aside for 3DS—meaning it cannot recoup those losses & expenses.
Look at this August 2013 article detailing SCE's financial woes.
PlayStation division posts losses, PS3, Vita sales lower than expected
Excerpt:
The firm's gaming division, however, posted operating losses of 14.8 billion yen (£98.7 million / $150.1 million) - compared to 3.5 billion yen (£23.3 million / $35.5 million) during the same period in 2012 - and flat revenues of 117.9 billion yen (£789.2 millon / $1.2 billion).
The increased operating losses have been attributed to research and development of the PS4, and declining PS3 and Vita sales.
The firm had originally forecast combined PS3/PS2 sales of 10 million for the entire year, but has so far only managed to shift 1.1 million.
Likewise, Sony has forecast 5 million Vita sales, but only managed to sell 600,000 in the three-month period ending June 30.
Despite warnings that operating costs will continue to deteriorate, the company hopes to turn its gaming business around with the release of the PS4.
And yet we have people worrying about Nintendo's future when Nintendo has the money bin reserves to handle their losses.
It's SONY who's the one in trouble here. PS4 cannot AFFORD to fight off the PS3. LITERALLY.
Over the years Sony has been trying their damndest to make the PS3 a respectable console.
The Slim redesign, the Kevin Butler marketing campaigns, PlayStation Move, anything & everything to remove the stink off of it.
But it's too little too late.
By the time they finally made the PS3 sell at a profit, Nintendo was already prepared to move on to the next generation.
Since Nintendo pretty much withdrew Wii in 2011, both the PS3 & XBox 360 have been eating Wii's leftovers.
Many sales that would have gone to Wii went to either the PS3 or 360 since Nintendo wasn't serious on putting many games on the system anymore.
What sales Wii DID get was just dumb momentum from the past—lazy sales they got from putting the console on automatic, on cruise control.
When Nintendo released Wii U in 2012, Sony & Microsoft knew they couldn't rely on eating Wii's leftovers anymore & time was limited for recouping their losses on the PS3 & 360.
If they had their way, they would extend the 7th gen for as long as it took to cover those losses & expenses they got during the lifetime of the PS3 & 360.
But they couldn't let Nintendo own the 8th gen all to themselves so they had to rush out some kind of machine to challenge them.
Which is MORE expense & MORE potential for loss.
Nintendo never launches first (not since the 3rd gen they introduced with the Famicom/NES) & Nintendo never sells consoles for a loss.
NEVER. So these two things clued me in on Nintendo's ultimate goal here.
They were forcing Microsoft's & Sony's hands & since they knew that Wii killed the graphics argument for good that the other two couldn't rely on graphics as a selling point for their consoles anymore.
What do Sony & Microsoft do? They don't know! That's why this vid exists.
They're not really gamemakers & this gen they're gonna be forced to fight Nintendo on Nintendo's plane: Gamecraft.
Here's a spoiler: They cannot compete with Nintendo on gamecraft.
Both the PS4 & XBOne are gonna hit the wall. There's gonna be a backlash & lots of buyer's remorse coming from buyers of those two platforms based on what you see from Doctre81's video above.
It doesn't really matter who gets the best out of it between the PS4 & XBOne.
BOTH of them are gonna hit a wall. One of them will just hit it slightly harder (is this sentence a clue? ONE of them?).
What does this mean for SCE? Well I'll repeat what I typed from that article above detailing SCE's financial losses:
"The firm had originally forecast combined PS3/PS2 sales of 10 million for the entire year, but has so far only managed to shift 1.1 million.
Likewise, Sony has forecast 5 million Vita sales, but only managed to sell 600,000 in the three-month period ending June 30."
The PS3 is declining. The 7th generation is just about over.
They expected the PS3 to get 10 million for the entire year yet have only gotten a little over 1 million so far—1/10 of their expectation.
As the 7th gen fades away so does PS3's chances to go extra innings trying to top Wii's lifetime sales.
Remember the PS3 is not the phenomenon that the PS2 was. 10 year plans or not it ain't gonna have the same effect.
I'm sorry to kill the dreams of those hoping to knock Wii off the mountaintop.
But nobody's going over Wii from the 7th gen.
