It depends on screen size and viewing distance. For example 1280x800 16:10 is fine on my laptop, 1440x900 is fine on my old 19" 16:10 (why did they almost drop 16:10, it was better than 16:9 for everything but watching movies!
) PC monitor, but on my new 22" one 1080p starts being better and almost necessary. On TVs this translates to larger diagonals, given the longer viewing distance, but I guess that starting from 37-40" 1080p benefits start becoming noticeable (while 4k will become mainstream when 50" or more will become so too).
